Battle system

In Kaode, anyone can take part in a battle.
However, in order for you to understand and properly use your creatures, it is necessary to be able to read the amazing abilities and weaknesses of each of your Kaodes and enemies.

You character’s file and your Kaodian library are here your best tools, as in every situation, knowledge is power.

This part will give you some general indications about the battle system and the creatures of the Known World, whereas the rest of the battle lexicon (which you can also find in the game in your Kaodian library) will allow you to elaborate your strategy and organize your teams.

BATTLES IN KAODE

BATTLES IN KAODE

In Kaode, whether you’re facing enemies, wild Kaodes or another traveler, the battle scheme remains the same:

- After selecting your Kaodes (in your Kaodian crystal), the arena get loaded.
- Unique powers, compulsory passive abilities, object’s effects and handicap are activated.
- An initiative algorithm starts running, each player having 50% chance to start the battle. Then, the creature’s order is decided at random for each team and each creature.
- The first “creature round” of the first “battle round” starts. A battle lasts maximum 20 rounds, each creature has 60 seconds to launch an ability. Your aim is to defeat or eject enemy creatures.
- On each ”creature round”, effects are set and their duration is counted in rounds. Passive abilities maintenance costs are payed or abilities are automatically deactivated. It’s then up to you choose: which ability and which targets are you going to select?
- There is no even score in Kaode: after 20 round, the team who has inflicted the most damage during the battle wins (without including the “impact damages”).
- If the last two creatures standing shall be knocked out simultaneously, the team who stroke last wins.
- The rest is yours
ABILITIES AND ACTION'S PARCHMENTS

ABILITIES AND ACTION'S PARCHMENTS

You can check your creature’s abilities in the Kaode file of your Kaodian library, and your traveler’s abilities in the “weapon” file in the character’s files.

During a battle, your Kaode’s and your traveler’s abilities can be found on the left of your screen, under the action parchment icone. Click left to select them, and click right to access informations about their functions.

Each ability is characterised by a targeting, a reach and a resolution phase.

Passive abilities (and/or some unique powers who work the same way) are deactivated whenever a creature is knocked out, ejected or swapped.

Some abilities have an activation cost in vitality and/or energy, others have a zero or variable cost according to their damage index and the creature’s statistics, the number of targets and/or these latter’s level.

The selection of an ability and of a target can be done after some effects’ resolution phase at the beginning of your Kaode’s creature round, like the payment of the passive abilities’s maintenance cost of the said creature.
This action introduces the beginning of the resolution phase of the ability.
TURN ORDER

TURN ORDER

In Kaode, the “creature’s rounds” in a “battle round” is defined at random between all the players taking part in the battle, starting from the second creature.
The first team to act (choosing its creature at random) is chosen according to an initiative algorithm. Each team has 50% chance to start.

The round’s order appears on the middle of the battle interface, along with the creature whose creature turn it is in the center. The upcoming creatures can be found on the left, and the ones who’ve already played on the right.

When your cursor runs over one of the creatures in the round’s order representation, this latter will appear highlighted in order for you to know which creature already fought and which are about to.

To finish, the number of round fought is indicated next to the “timer”.
BATTLE HANDICAPS

BATTLE HANDICAPS

In certain areas of the Known World, your battle may be hindered by a “battle handicap”. It may be in some arenas or tournaments, an object or even because of a traveler’s archetype.

These handicaps can influence statistics, states, creature’s abilities, the round’s order, the experience at the end of a battle, the timer or the number of rounds in a battle.

Least but not last, they can also add some difficulties or further conditions to the battle.
TIMER

TIMER

In Kaode, a battle lasts maximum 20 rounds, each creature has 60 seconds to attack.

Once this time passed, and if you haven’t selected an ability that costs one creature round, the option “pass this round” will be selected automatically.
THE TRAVELER

THE TRAVELER

A traveler at the highest lever (25) has 29 statistic points, divided between the different basic statistics.
When his team battle, his statistics are added to the one of his fighting creatures, in order to symbolize his leadership.

A traveler possesses a weapon which gives him specific abilities, according to what weapon he holds.
These abilities are available during battle against wild creatures or/and when the traveler’s last creature is “knocked out” or “ejected”.
When a traveler personally takes part in a battle, his basic statistics are multiplied by 3.

A traveler can carry one object which can have a direct impact on a battle (bonus, battle handicaps, subtype add-ons et) under the terms of its effect.
EMPATHY

EMPATHY

The empathy points represent the emotional state of a Kaode towards the Traveler.

A Kaode which is in the red is likely to leave its team after a defeat, whereas a Kaode with a high rate of empathy is sure to receive the maximum experience after a victorious battle.

- A Kaode can win or lose empathy points depending on the outcome of a battle:
- A Kaode knocked out during a victorious battle does not lose nor gain empathy.
- A Kaode knocked out during a losing battle loses 2 empathy points.
- A Kaode still standing at the end of a victorious battle gains 1 empathy point
- A Kaode ejected during a battle doesn’t lose nor gains empathy, whatever the battle’s outcome is.
DEATH OF A KAODE

DEATH OF A KAODE

A Kaode knocked out at the end of a battle may draw its last breath.

Take care of your Kaode.
SUBTYPES

SUBTYPES

A creature’s subtypes enable to classify tendencies and characteristics of some Kaodes and enemies.

They help classify some creatures and sometimes offer bonuses or inherent immunities to some effects:
- Creatures with the subtype “Undead” are immuned to the “Death” effect.
- Creatures with the subtype “Flying” are immuned to the “Ejection” effect, and add a bonus of +2% to your escape roll (for each flying and non K.O creature).
- Creatures with the subtype “Robotic” are immuned to the “Poison” effect.
- Creatures with the subtype “Monster” are immuned to the “Mental control” effect.
- ?

Also, some abilities require to possess a particular subtype to be launched.

Finally, when a subtype is lost:
- The eventual immunity it was confering is deactivated.
- An ability requiring a lost subtype can't be activated anymore.
- The abilities that were targeting the possessors of a particular subtype can't target a creature that losts this subtype.
IMMUNITIES

IMMUNITIES

Immunities to an effect or a type of damage sometime come from an ability affecting the creature, or from a subtype.

They can be expressed in two different ways:
- Creatures immune to “mental control” can’t be the target of an ability containing the “mental control” effect.
- Creatures immune to “ejection”, “poison” and “death” effects are not threatened by such effects when an ability is resolved.
CREATURE'S SIZES

CREATURE'S SIZES

In Kaode, each creature has its own size, categorized from 1 to 5.

Certain abilities are likely to affect creatures differently according to their size, or can aim preferably creatures of which size is defined by the ability.

A size 1 creature is usually quite small, not over 25 centimeters.
A size 2 creatures is between 25 centimeters and 1,20 meters tall.
A size 3 creature usually is the same height as a standard human.
A size 4 creature is larger or more massive, taller than a standard human, but in the maximum standards of the pre-cataclysmic animals.
Size 5 creatures are huge, they can be several meter wide and/or a dozen meter tall.
INNATE ABILITIES

INNATE ABILITIES

An innate ability is an ability a creature has right from level 1.

During a battle round, only innate abilities of the same name can be used several times by Kaodes of the same specie, contrary to acquired abilities.
ABILITIES TO BE ACQUIRED

ABILITIES TO BE ACQUIRED

Each ability to acquire is specific and can be obtained at the end of a victorious battle, through 4 different ways:
- Whenever a creature reaches a certain level.
- Whenever a Kaode, with a certain level, enters a certain place with its traveler.
- When a Kaode’s traveler of a certain level, fights with a certain object.
- When a Kaode’s traveler of a certain level, obtains a certain achievement.

Depending on the creature's rarity, some recquirement such as the necessity of an object, the visit of a place or the possession of an achievment can be avoided in the learning process of the ability.

During a battle round, only one creature of the same specie can use an acquired ability of the same name.
RARITY: COMMON
(Accustomed Kaode)

RARITY: COMMON
(Accustomed Kaode)

A Kaode with the "common" rarity level is called an "accustomed Kaode".

They are creatures that spent some time on human territory, with human societies and that learned from these exchanges.

An "accustomed" Kaode will automatically gain its "learned from objects" ability once it will get to the correct level, without having to answer to the additional conditions normally recquired by the said ability.

In the case of a creature able to evolve, the evolution will be an "evolution by object".
RARITY: UNCOMMON
(Kaode explorer)

RARITY: UNCOMMON
(Kaode explorer)

A Kaode with the "uncommon" rarity level is called a "Kaode explorer".

They are creatures that migrated and traveled from territories to territories, learned from their encounters and new environments.

A "Kaode explorer" will automatically gain its "learned from visited place" ability once it will get to the correct level, without having to answer to the additional conditions normally recquired by the said ability.

In the case of a creature able to evolve, the evolution will be an "evolution by visited place".
RARITY: RARE
(Epic Kaode)

RARITY: RARE
(Epic Kaode)

A Kaode with the "rare" rarity level is called a "Epic Kaode".

They are creatures that really fought to survive, saved or led a group of creatures, or took part in important events.

An "epic Kaode" will automatically gain its "learned from achievment" ability once it will get to the correct level, without having to answer to the additional conditions normally recquired by the said ability.

In the case of a creature able to evolve, the evolution will be an "evolution by achievment".
ABILITIES LEARNED BY LEVEL

ABILITIES LEARNED BY LEVEL

An ability “to be acquired” with this symbol can be reached by a creature at a certain level, at the end of a victorious battle.

A creature faced at a higher level and which doesn’t has the ability is still able to obtain it at the end of a battle.
ABILITIES LEARNED FROM OBJECT

EVOLUTION

EVOLUTION

Some Kaode under level 80 are likely to evolve at the end of a victorious battle.

Depending on their rarity symbol, Kaodes can evolve through 3 different ways:
- When a Kaode of a certain level visits a certain place with its traveler.
- When a Kaode’s traveler of a certain level, fights with a certain object.
- When a Kaode’s traveler of a certain level, obtains a certain achievement.

When a Kaode evolve, it will irretrievably change into another predefined creature.
The traveler can then reorganize the new creature’s statistic points, with a 5 points bonus.

A creature of which traveler would have refused an evolution once already will still be able to evolve at the end of the next two level up, after that, it will keep it initial form forever.

Last but not least: an “evolved” creature isn’t more “powerful” by definition. It is just a different one.
EVOLUTION BY OBJECT
